1. Digital Arrest Scam
Imagine receiving a call from someone claiming to be a police officer or a cybercrime official. They tell you that your social media activity is under investigation, and you must pay a fine to avoid arrest. This is a Digital Arrest Scam—a fear-based tactic used to extort money. Scammers often use spoofed caller IDs to appear legitimate. Remember, law enforcement agencies never demand payments over calls or messages.
How to Stay Safe:
Never share personal or financial details over the phone.
Verify the caller's identity by contacting the official department directly.
Report such scams to cybercrime authorities.
2. WhatsApp OTP Scams
In this scam, fraudsters trick users into sharing their One-Time Password (OTP), which is used for logging into WhatsApp. They may impersonate a friend, a delivery service, or a bank representative, convincing you to forward an OTP sent to your number. Once they gain access, they lock you out and use your account for fraudulent activities.
How to Stay Safe:
Never share OTPs with anyone, even if they claim to be from WhatsApp support.
Enable two-step verification in WhatsApp settings.
If your account is compromised, contact WhatsApp support immediately.
3. Fake Celebrity Giveaways
Social media is filled with fake giveaways featuring famous celebrities or influencers. These scams usually promise cash prizes, luxury items, or gadgets in exchange for a small "registration fee" or personal information. Once you pay or provide details, the scammer disappears.
How to Stay Safe:
Verify giveaway campaigns by checking official social media handles.
Never pay upfront for a giveaway.
Avoid clicking on suspicious links that ask for personal details.
